Hungary was one of the first countries in Central and Eastern Europe to develop a consumer association. Originally established in 1982 as the National Consumer Council, it was re-established in its present form as the National Association for Consumer Protection in Hungary (NACPH) – Országos Fogyasztóvédelmi Egyesület (OFE) – in 1991. NACPH is a voluntary, non-profit organisation furthering public interest that acts both as a federation of local consumer groups and as a national pressure group. The membership of NACPH comprises regional consumer groups in each of the counties and local consumer groups in several towns within Hungary. NACPH has steadily gained much of its strength from the willingness of both individual and corporate members – besides experts from various areas from legal advise, through food safety and finance, to media and PR, as many as 2000 volunteers are currently involved in our work – devoting their time and expertise for the benefit of consumer protection and for NACPH in particular.
