The foundation of the factory reaches back to 1852. It was then that Miklós Zsolnay, from the hard pottery manufactory in Lukafa, founded the Zsolnay Hard Pottery Manufactory, the ‘ancestor’ of the factory, which he put on the name of his son Ignác in 1854, by changing the company registration. Vilmos Zsolnay, by experimenting with different types of clay and glaze, developed the one-time small workshop into the first workshop producing artistic ceramics in the country. Eosin products – Ornamental objects of different sizes and building decoration elements alike are made of this material. Pyrogranite products – The ‘pyro’ prefix refers to firing the products at a high temperature, while ‘granite’ to their solidity and durability. This porous material is acid and frost resistant, consequently neither humidity nor cold, or not even the air of cities polluted with exhaust fumes can corrode it. This is why it is eminently suitable for the production of building decorative ceramics, roof tiles, indoor and outdoor decorative objects and stoves and fireplaces. Zsolnay porcelain – By the end of 1877 Vilmos Zsolnay developed a method of producing a new enamel which is fired at a high temperature and translucent, ivory colour glazed colourfully decorated Zsolnay porcelain was born.
