Óvártej Cheese Factory

2007. July • 25.

The history of cheese making in Óvár with more than one century past is closely interwoven with the history of Magyar Királyi Tejgazdasági Állomás (Hungarian Royal Dairy Station) established in 1903 and Magyar Tejgazdasági Kísérleti Intézet (Hungarian Dairy Experimental Institute). Thanks to the work of Imre Ujhelyi establishing the first small cheese factory in 1905 and the famous dairy researchers and specialists following him the cheese factory – and together with it the following cheese types: Ilmic, Óvár, Vadász, Lajta, Pannónia and Kaskaval – became well-known all over Europe as early back as the first half of the last century
